Export Packing Guide 2026
Wooden Crate & Wood Packing Costs and How to Choose

Trying to export machinery and not sure how to pack it? Choosing the wrong export packing method can lead to damage claims or customs rejection. Here's a complete 2026 practitioner's guide to wooden crates, wood packing, ISPM 15 fumigation rules, and the full packing-agent process.

Export packing guide — wooden crate, wood packing, and ISPM 15

1. Types of Export Packing — Boxes, Pallets, Wood Packing & Wooden Crates Compared

Export packing selection depends on the cargo type, weight, mode of transport, and destination-country regulations. Understanding the four most common methods makes the choice much easier.

Packing methodDescriptionBest forISPM 15 applies?
Standard box packingCorrugated cardboard or plastic boxes. The most basic methodLightweight consumer goods, electronicsNot applicable
Pallet packingCargo loaded and wrapped on a wood or plastic palletBundled boxes, general cargoApplies if pallet is wood
Wood packingCargo secured with a wood frame structure on a pallet. Open constructionLarge cargo, industrial machinery, furnitureMandatory
Wooden crateFully enclosed wood box. Highest level of protectionPrecision machinery, heavy cargo, precision equipmentMandatory
💡 Hybrid packing combines wood packing with added moisture/water protection on the outside, or cushioning materials inside. It's used for cargo — like precision equipment — that needs protection against both impact and humidity.

2. Cargo Types That Need a Wooden Crate

Not every shipment needs a wooden crate. If your cargo meets any of the following conditions, a wooden crate is strongly recommended.

1
Precision machinery, medical equipment, semiconductor equipment
Precision equipment sensitive to vibration and shock needs a fully enclosed structure to block outside pressure. Internal cushioning (foam, air cushioning) is also recommended.
2
Heavy cargo (500kg and up)
Cargo over 500kg is hard for a standard box or simple pallet to support structurally. A wooden crate engineered for that load capacity is required.
3
Long-haul sea transport (30+ days)
Extended sea voyages expose cargo to moisture, condensation, and vibration together. A wooden crate with moisture protection keeps cargo safe.
4
Irregularly shaped cargo (non-standard structures)
Rollers, shafts, large pipes, and other shapes that don't fit a standard box leave a custom-built wooden crate or wood packing as the only real option.

3. ISPM 15 Wood Fumigation Rules — Which Countries Require It

ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is the international plant-health standard designed to prevent pests attached to wood packaging from entering an importing country. International shipments using wood packaging must be heat-treated (HT) or fumigated and marked with the IPPC stamp.

Destination country/regionISPM 15 mandatory?If not complied
United States✅ MandatoryOn-site treatment, or return/disposal
🇪🇺 All EU member states✅ MandatoryReturn or incineration
🇨🇳 China✅ MandatoryQuarantine hold, treatment cost charged
🇯🇵 Japan✅ MandatoryReturned to origin
🇦🇺 Australia✅ Mandatory (strict)Destroyed by incineration
🇨🇦 Canada✅ MandatoryReturn or incineration
🇸🇬 Singapore✅ MandatoryReturn or incineration
🇻🇳 Vietnam✅ MandatoryQuarantine treatment before clearance
Other IPPC member countries (~140)✅ MandatoryVaries by country
⚠️ Failing to comply with ISPM 15 can lead not only to a customs return but to the entire shipment being destroyed. If you're using wood packaging, always have it treated by a certified fumigation company and confirm the IPPC stamp is applied before shipping.

4. Wood Packing vs. Wooden Crate — How to Choose

In short: a wooden crate fully encloses the cargo, while wood packing secures it with an open frame. Which one fits depends on your cargo's characteristics.

When full protection matters
Wooden crate
Precision machinery, heavy cargo, moisture-sensitive items. Fully blocks outside impact, moisture, and dust.
Enclosed
Large, open-structure cargo
Wood packing
Large industrial machinery, furniture, irregular cargo. Secured with a frame, lightweight relative to its weight capacity.
Frame-based
Combined requirements
Hybrid
Cargo needing protection against shock, moisture, and other special conditions at once. Wood packing plus moisture protection, or a crate plus cushioning.
Custom-built

5. The Packing-Agent Process — From Pickup to Shipment

When you outsource packing, your forwarder handles the entire process below for you. You don't need to source a packing vendor or a fumigation company separately.

01
Submit cargo details and decide the packing method
Tell us the cargo type, size, weight, and destination, and we'll advise whether wood packing, a wooden crate, or a hybrid solution fits best.
ISPM 15 fumigation needs are confirmed at this stage too Packing drawings and material selection are proposed by the forwarder
02
Cargo pickup
We pick up cargo from your factory or warehouse. For large cargo, we confirm in advance whether special vehicles (crane, low-bed trailer, etc.) are needed.
03
Packing construction and ISPM 15 fumigation
The wood packaging is built, then heat-treated (HT) or fumigated by a certified provider. The IPPC stamp is branded directly onto the wood.
A quarantine certificate is issued once fumigation is complete Internal desiccant (silica gel) insertion is available as an option
04
Shipping documents prepared and cargo shipped
Invoice, packing list, fumigation certificate, and other shipping documents are prepared together, then the cargo is shipped.

6. Problems Caused by Packing Failures

Choosing the wrong export packing method or ignoring ISPM 15 rules leads to more than financial loss — it delays your delivery timeline too.

Customs returnISPM 15 non-compliance, missing IPPC stampReturn to origin or incineration → delivery delay + added cost

8. Export Packing — Frequently Asked Questions

A wooden crate is a fully enclosed wood box that completely shields cargo from outside impact. Wood packing secures cargo to a pallet with a wood frame structure, making it lighter than a crate and easier to inspect internally. Crates suit precision machinery and heavy cargo; wood packing suits large but less shock-sensitive cargo.
ISPM 15 applies to exports to roughly 140 IPPC member countries, including the US, all EU member states, China, Japan, Australia, and Canada. Wood packaging must be heat-treated (HT) or fumigated and marked with the IPPC stamp. Failure to comply can result in return or destruction at destination customs.
Yes, Tosome Logis offers a full export packing service. We handle pickup, packing design, wooden crate/wood packing construction, ISPM 15 fumigation, and shipment end to end. You don't need to source a packing vendor or a fumigation company separately.
Wooden crates or wood packing are generally recommended for machinery exports. Precision machinery, electronic equipment, and shock-sensitive cargo are safest fully enclosed in a wooden crate with internal cushioning (foam, air cushioning). Large industrial machinery that's relatively shock-resistant can often be secured with wood packing instead.
If you have cargo insurance, damage may be covered. However, insurers can deny claims they classify as "insufficient packing." When a forwarder handles the packing, liability is clearer and claims are easier to process.
