1. What Is a Wooden Crate?
A wooden crate is export packaging built from timber, formally known as a Wooden Crate. It's also commonly called wood packing or a wood box.
The biggest difference from a standard cardboard box is structural strength. Built from plywood and lumber framing, it absorbs the shock, compression, and vibration that occur during long-haul air or sea transport.
✓
Precision machinery, industrial equipment, semiconductor tools
Essential packaging for high-value equipment sensitive to shock and vibration.
✓
Paintings, artwork, framed wedding photos
Items that can't be restored if damaged are protected with a custom-built wooden crate.
✓
Electronic panels, displays, high-value electronics
Suited to products vulnerable to surface scratches and pressure.
✓
Heavy items at risk of damage in ordinary boxes
A wooden crate is the safer choice for heavy cargo where a box's base could give way.
⚠️ For international shipments, wood packaging materials must be heat-treated (HT) lumber under IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) rules. Without this certification, destination customs can refuse clearance.
2. Why Wooden Crate Packing Costs Add Up
Unlike standard-sized boxes, wooden crates are custom-built for each individual shipment. This build method is itself the biggest driver of cost. Specifically, the following factors compound one another.
| Packing type | Example cargo | Why it costs more |
| Standard box packing | Small parts, samples | Uses standard-size boxes as-is, minimal extra processing |
| Hybrid packing (box + wood reinforcement) | Mid-size electronics, instruments | Manual work adding lumber and plywood bracing to a box |
| Wooden crate (small) | Precision equipment, panels | Custom-built after on-site measurement, plywood cut and assembled |
| Wooden crate (medium) | Industrial machinery, large artwork | Added materials and labor for internal framing and cushioning |
| Wooden crate (large / with skid) | Heavy machinery, equipment | Skid (base) built separately, materials use rises sharply |
💡 Why packing can look more expensive than freight: A wooden crate isn't a standardized product — it's custom-built to the exact dimensions of your shipment, so the material and labor cost of cutting and assembly gets baked directly into the price. Add in ISPM-compliant heat-treated lumber, internal cushioning, and waterproofing, and the process simply involves more steps than basic packing. That said, weighed against the cost of re-exporting a damaged shipment, it's often the more rational choice.
Comparing Packing Types
Best for light samples
Standard box
Basic-level shock and compression protection. Suited only to light, simple cargo.
Low cost
Best for mid-size equipment
Hybrid
Box plus wood reinforcement. The most balanced option for mid-size electronics and instruments.
Best value
Precision / high-value cargo
Wooden crate
Top-tier shock and compression protection. Essential for precision equipment and high-value pieces.
Maximum protection
3. If Packing Cost Is Hard to Cut, Lower Your Freight Instead
Wooden crate packing has a real build cost that's hard to reduce significantly. But many shippers are also losing money on freight.
Getting a quote directly from DHL, FedEx, or UPS's own site applies their list rate. Tosome Logis carries contract discounts with all three, so you can ship on the same DHL or FedEx network for up to 80% less.
| Category | Booking direct | Booking through Tosome Logis |
| Rate applied | DHL/FedEx/UPS list rate | 3-carrier contract discount (up to 80% off) |
If packing cost is fixed, the freight side is where you should save. We also compare DHL, FedEx, and UPS to tell you which carrier is currently strongest for your destination country.
